| I Am Eleven (2011)
An insightful feature documentary about 11 year olds around the world. "Sometimes I have to remind myself, Grace, don't grow up too quickly, you're eleven, just enjoy it while you can." Grace, 11, Britain living in Czech Republic What is it like to be eleven? Eleven year olds the world over share, in different languages their thoughts on issues such as war, love, hormones, terror, religion, Shakespeare, North Korea, Disney and Avril Lavigne. Each of their situations allows a single glimpse into a young mind, and combine to provide a powerful insight into the future of our world. With the intimate observation and visually alluring style of To Be and To Have, and shot with close ups of faces with fearless determined expressions we come to know key and minor characters from all over the world. Eleven is currently in production, with subjects from Japan, Netherlands, Germany, China, USA, Sweden, Denmark, UK, and the Czech Republic already contributing greatly to this exciting snapshot of a generation. As straight up and personal as the 7 Up Series, and with the comedy and honesty of Spellbound, this film's innovative, cinematic approach enables us to explore an age where these 'not quite kids, not quite teenagers' briefly linger, between the frank openness and sometimes naivety of childhood, and the sharp and surprisingly brave wisdom and knowing of adulthood. As much as it is a story about them, it is a story with them, of what it is like to be eleven today. The filmmakers' intrepid and solo style of working allows unusually close and natural access to her subjects and each of their musings on life, resulting in strong uniquely stylised images with strikingly personal portrayals of a generation exploring their take on personal and global issues.
